How to Make Your Human Hair Wig Last: A Nairobi Care Routine

Dust, sun and daily matatu rides are tough on hair. Here is the simple weekly routine that keeps your unit soft for years.

The short answer

To make a human hair wig last: wash it every 7–14 wears with sulphate-free shampoo, deep condition, detangle gently from the ends up, air dry on a stand, use heat protectant and moderate heat, sleep in a satin bonnet, and store it on a wig stand away from dust and direct sun. Book a professional revamp when it starts to tangle.

A good human hair wig is an investment. Treat it right and it will stay soft, shiny and tangle-free for years. Here is our routine.

Every day

  • Detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends and working up.
  • Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase. Cotton causes friction and frizz.
  • On dusty, sunny days, a light leave-in keeps the hair from drying out.

Every 7–14 wears: wash day

  1. Detangle before wetting.
  2. Wash in cool water with a sulphate-free shampoo, smoothing downwards. Never scrub.
  3. Deep condition for 15–20 minutes.
  4. Rinse, blot with a microfibre towel, and air dry on a wig stand.

Heat, without the damage

Always use a heat protectant and keep tools at a moderate temperature. Curls refreshed with water and leave-in need much less heat than daily flat-ironing.

Storage

Keep your unit on a wig stand or in a silk bag, away from direct sun and dust.

When it is time for a revamp

If the hair is matting, the curls have dropped or the lace looks tired, bring it to us for a professional revamp.

Quick answers

How often should I wash my human hair wig?

Every 7–14 wears, or sooner if you use a lot of product or sweat a lot. Over-washing dries the hair out.

Why is my wig tangling?

Tangling usually comes from dryness, friction (collars, cotton pillows) and product build-up. A deep condition, satin bonnet and gentle detangling help, or bring it in for a revamp.
